What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Unlike older keys, modern car keys are equipped with specific chips inside that are specific to each vehicle. This keeps thieves from taking the key and then turning on the car.

Keys can be purchased from the dealership or cloned at a locksmith's shop. The process for programing the key is different for each manufacturer and involves turning the key to the off position without starting the engine, and then taking it off it within a certain time frame.

Transponder Codes

When a transponder gets interrogated it transmits an encoded signal that is accompanied by an eight-digit code. This signal, referred to as SQUAWK Code SQUAWK Code is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to send a specific message to the air traffic control system in the event of an emergency or to alert controllers to changes in weather conditions. Squawk codes are commonly used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to talk on the radio and are very important for safe flying.


Every aircraft has a transponder which responds to radar queries with an identifier code. This allows ATC to identify an aircraft that is surrounded by screens. Mode S transponders offer more specific information including call signs and positions which are useful in airspace that is congested.

VIN Numbers

VIN numbers are used to identify vehicles and provide a wealth of information about them. VIN numbers are unique to every vehicle on earth, except for alien cars (or whatever). The 17 numbers of the VIN code are a combination of letters and numbers which can be decoded to reveal crucial information about your car or truck.

A VIN number is comprised of several sections, each of which contains specific information.
